An open letter

It is fine not to know where to start.

To everyone who runs a meat business,

You probably hear about AI every day. From customers, suppliers, salespeople and the news. Everyone says it will change everything. Very few tell you what to do on Monday morning.

If you don’t know where to start, you are not behind.Note in the margin: this is normal. really. Most of the people we meet are in the same place. They run plants, coldstores, trucks and trading desks. Their days are full, and they have no time for a project that might go nowhere.

We know, because we do the same work. We are meat traders. At MeatBorsa we buy and sell meat every day, and our desk had the same pile as yours: orders typed in from email and WhatsApp, CMRs filled in by hand, trucks and payments chased by phone. So we built software to do that work for us. Our own trading desk runs on it today. MakeBetter is how we bring it to you.

First, what AI is.Note in the margin: five words, explained below ↓ By AI we mean software that can read, write and listen almost like a person. It can take a messy order email, a price list, a voice note or a scanned document and do something useful with it. It is fast and it does not get bored. It does not know your customers, and it does not decide anything.

That is why it matters in our trade. In a meat business the money is rarely lost in one place. It leaks away in hours. Typing an order into the system. Filling in the same document again. Chasing a truck, a certificate, a payment. Checking one paper against another. That is exactly the work AI is good at. Every hour it takes off someone’s desk goes back to a customer, a price or a problem. That is where the time is saved, and where the money is.

We won’t put a number on it here. It depends on your business, and we would rather measure it with you than guess. Our tools map how the work is really done and time each step, so you see the hours before you change anything.

Maybe you have worries. What it costs. Who sees your data. What it means for your people. Looking foolish in front of someone who seems to know more. Spending a year on a big project that changes nothing. These are fair worries. We answer each of them at the end of this letter.

Here is what we suggest.

Start small. Pick one task that annoys you.

The one that eats your Friday afternoon. The one someone does by copying from one screen to another.Note in the margin: like typing in orders from email We look at that one task first. If AI can help, we show you how. If it can’t, we tell you.

You keep every decision. AI does the reading, the typing, the matching and the chasing. Prices, quality, credit, customers and signatures stay with you and your people. Nothing goes out in your name until you say so.

We do the setup, start to finish. You don’t need to hire anyone or learn anything technical. Your systems stay where they are. Our engineers connect the tools to what you already use, in your team’s language. When a change is live, we show you what it saved and hand it over to your team.

So the first step is small. Book thirty minutes with us and bring one task that eats your week.Note in the margin: 30 minutes. no slides. There is no big project after that. We map how that work is done, build the first change, and it is live in weeks. Then you decide what comes next.

And please ask us anything. There are no silly questions. We asked most of them ourselves, at our own desk.

With best wishes,

The people at MakeBetter, from the MeatBorsa trading desk

P.S. You don’t need to understand AI to start. You only need to know which task you would happily never do again. That part, you already know.

Enclosure 1 of 2The words

Five words you keep hearing.

What each one means, in a line, and what it looks like in a meat business.

AInoun

Software that can read, write and listen almost like a person. It is fast and it does not get bored. It does not know your customers, and it does not decide anything.

On a meat deskReading an order that came in on WhatsApp and typing it into your system.

Language modelnoun · also “LLM”

The engine inside most AI tools today, the kind behind ChatGPT. It has read a vast amount of text, so it can understand a messy email and write a clear reply. It can also be wrong with confidence, which is why a person checks what matters.

On a meat deskKnowing that “coppa s/o”, “Schweinenacken o. K.” and “boneless pork collar” are the same product.

Agentnoun

AI that does one small job from start to finish on its own, inside rules you set, and leaves anything unusual for a person.

On a meat deskReading each new order email, filling in the order and its documents, and leaving them for someone to check.

Automationnoun

A routine step a computer does for you, the same way every time. That part is not new. What is new is that AI can now take on work that needs reading, not only clicking.

On a meat deskA payment reminder drafted in the buyer’s own language when an invoice runs late.

Digital transformationphrase

A big name for a big project: slides, a long plan, new systems. We prefer one useful change at a time, inside the systems you already have.

On a meat deskUsually not what you need first.

Enclosure 2 of 2The questions

Questions people ask us.

Honest answers. If yours is not here, ask it. There are no silly ones.

  1. 01

    What does it cost?

It depends on what we build, so we would rather not guess on a web page. You get a clear price before anything starts. Starting with one task keeps the first step small.

  2. 02

    Who sees our data?

Your team and the engineers working with you. We read your email, files and systems only with your permission, and only for the work you asked for. What we build for you stays yours.

  3. 03

    Will it replace my people?

It replaces typing, copying and chasing. Not people. Your team keeps the customers, the prices, the quality calls and the relationships. The tools work in their language, on the phones and screens they already use.

  4. 04

Do we have to change our systems?

No. Your ERP, email, WhatsApp and spreadsheets stay. We build on them.

  5. 05

    How long before something changes?

Mapping the work takes days. The first change is live in the weeks after. There is no year-long project.

  6. 06

What if the AI gets something wrong?

Sometimes it will, as people do. So it shows what it read, flags what looks unusual and leaves the decisions to a person. Nothing goes out in your name until you say so.

  7. 07

We are a small company. Is this for us?

If one task eats hours every week, yes. Small teams feel those hours most.

  8. 08

What if AI can’t help with our task?

Then we tell you on the first call. Sometimes the honest answer is a better spreadsheet.

Your reply

Book thirty minutes.

Bring one task that eats your week. We will tell you honestly what we would do with it, and what we would not.
